Medal of Honor: For extraordinary heroism on 27 May 1864, while serving with Company A, 9th New York Cavalry, in action at Crumps Creek, Virginia. With a small force on a reconnaissance Sergeant Putnam drove off a strong body of the enemy, charged into another force of the enemy's cavalry and stampeded them, taking 27 prisoners.
