Colonel,

You will inform your command, that the Division Decoration for valor and meritorious conduct, will be given to those recommended, after their return home, should any of them conclude not to return to the Division, in which the 1st New York has held such a distinguished position.

The Division Decoration which will be called the Kearny Cross, will be forwarded to you for presentation in such manner as your officers and men may determine upon. I sincerely hope that your regiment will conclude to go home in a body, be received in New York with double honors as veterans, who having faithfully served their enlistment, will not leave their Country’s service, until the rebels are driven from our front. And after a month’s furlough return to the Division that will receive them again with pride.
