William Schouler
Adjutant General State of Massachusetts
General,
I have the honor to herewith enclose Monthly Report for month of July, of 3rd Battalion, 1st Massachusetts Regiment Cavalry Volunteers. The only changes that have been made since first of month is the transfer of Captain John G. Thayer to the other battalion, and leave of absence (on account of sickness) to Captain James H. Case of company K. The health of my command is better, in proportion to its numbers than any other command in the Department. I have about 40 men on Morris Island under Lieutenant Holt and as you will see by reports only one man badly wounded during the recent engagements.
I am, General
Very Respectfully Your Obedient Servant
Atherton H. Stevens Jr.
