Mr. Dunham
Dear Sir,
Having a few letters in my possession belonging to your brother, I have taken the liberty of opening one and finding it from you. I sent it with three others to your address. I suppose you will know who the letters are from and can return them. I should have sent them before but have been unwell since arriving in this place. I also waited thinking to hear from Hal. I have heard but different from what I expected. Right before last word came that he was dead. He was badly wounded September 17th. I did not see him after he fell neither could I learn where he was until the night before we left the battlefield for this place and then I could not get to leave to go to him. I have not learned where he was when he died. Hoping you will receive this.
I remain a friend,
J. Q. A. Ferguson

P. S. Since writing this above I learned that Hallowell died at Hoffman House near the battlefield and was buried near there.
