My Dear Friend,

I am in receipt of yours of the 24th inst. and was very glad to know that Colonel Schley has punctually attended to my request. And am very sorry to think that you should suppose my doing so conveyed the most distant idea of disrespect or want of friendship towards you. I assure you, my friend, that I could not be guilty of such a thing. I am fully sensible of all the invaluable favors you have done me and are still doing. And whilst I live, it is impossible I should ever forget them. No, no my kind friend. What I done has given me satisfaction. If you knew me better, you would be aware that no one suffers more under a load of obligations than I do and nothing gives me more pleasure than to repay them. I hope though that you will balance my account with you and retain the balance to meet future calls. I don’t want any money sent me here, inasmuch as I could not get it if it were sent. I have got one box of books, etc. and one box containing two hams. The bread box I have not yet received.

But presume I will soon. When you have sent the one you speak of you need not forward anymore until you hear from me. Special exchanges are the order of the day. I wonder if I could not be put through? Could you by any means or through any interest send up by “Flag of Truce” a lieutenant for four humble servants. Eh? My regiment is now reenlisted and is going to the front forthwith. I do so wish to be along. Will you try? I am my dear James, yours respectfully,

John B. Wilson
