Friend Jacob,

I now take this opportunity to write a few lines to you. To let you know that I am well and in joy myself first rate. We got down here Friday, January 17 and a very pretty place it is too. We have to drill two hours a day. It storms about four days in a week. And the rest of the time it showers. And when there is a shower here, it is shower to what you see up there but when there is a pleasant day here , it is very beautiful and the birds sing very beautifully.

I should like to be up to New Hampshire to go a gunning with you. To go out nights after partridges when there are budding. Like the time we stayed on the boat eight days and it was pretty hard time for us too. For it stormed every day.

General Burnsides fleet has not started out yet. We expect he will start in about a week.

Tell Little Smith I wish him much joy and I shall expect a treat when I get home. On that little woman of his. Let him know I don’t get any whiskey here and I want him to get that old two gallon jug full to the brim and we will drink hearty. I shall get home about April or May. Time enough for you and I to go over to Uncle Sam’s a fishing. I want you to write all the news that is flying up there and keep all the wildest right there till I get home. Give my love to all the folks and tell them that I am well contented.

This is all now.

Respectfully yours,
