My dear and most loving wife,

It is with pleasure that I seat myself to write you a few lines to let you know that I am well and am doing better than could think. I guess that you have heard of my misfortune. If not I was capture the 4th of this month near Mt. Hope, Alabama. And have been treated well all the time and arrived here the 17th and have been well all the time. And I hope I will keep well. And I hope when this comes to hand it may find you and the family well. My dear you don’t know how bad I want to see you and I hope it won’t be long until we meet to remain together in Peace.

My dear, you don’t have to concern yourself about me. In the way of clothes for I have enough at this time. Tell sis Tot, that I want to see her and want to write to me tell all to write as I can’t mention all of them. Tell Lemmy and Jimmy and Flommy to be good.
