My Dear Friend,

Your favor of the 27th inst. Was duly received. I was much pleased to hear from you again, the box sent to Mr. Howard was received by him at the same time as mine. Dear friend, I trust you enjoy god health. I am in very good health myself and excellent spirits. We all enjoy ourselves as much as possible under the circumstances. One of my friends is just now engaged in a sociable game at cards, while another is trying to pass time by narrating his past exploits to a numerous and admiring crowd of auditors, and still another is amusing himself by ogling his opposite neighbor, while the literary gent of the party is deeply interested in a ponderous volume of Josephus. Another friend is (like myself) sedulously engaged in writing to his lady love and this completes the group, so you see how different our pursuits are in trying to relieve the dull and tedious monotony of prison life. When you write to Miss Corey, please tell her when I last heard from her particular friend Captain McSherry he was well and in good spirits. My kind regards to your sister, would like very much to receive a letter from her. Write again soon, Adieu.

Your friend
