I have the honor to apply for permission to appear before the Board of Examination of applicants for commission to colored regiments, for examination.

I first entered the service as 2nd Lieutenant, 3rd Regiment, Massachusetts Militia, April 15, 1861. Was mustered out July 22, 1861. Was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, 29th Regiment Massachusetts Infantry Volunteers, June 1, 1862. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant, December 29, 1862. Appointed Adjutant, March 1, 1863. Promoted to Captain, October 12, 1864. Appointed Major of Volunteers by Brevet for gallant and meritorious conduct at the Battle of Fort Stedman to date, March 25, 1865. Commissioned Major of the 29th Massachusetts Volunteers, May 15, 1865 but not mustered in as such. Had command of 29th Massachusetts Volunteers from March 25, 1865 to June 6, 1865. Was mustered out August 8, 1865. Can furnish the best of references for integrity and sobriety if required.
