Camp Frieze, Tennallytown
June 11, 1862

Whereas John H. Powell, Captain Company “L” 9th Regiment Rhode Island Volunteers having been promoted to the majorship of the 9th Regiment Rhode Island Volunteers; and he having accepted the commission offered him without solicitation on his part be it unanimously resolved.

1st. That the thanks of his squad be tendered to him for the many acts of kindness he has shown us while occupying the position of commander Company L. Though we regret losing him, and knowing that in no other man will we find his equal as a commander; we cheerfully give him up as commander of our company; knowing that he will be an ornament to the regiment in which he will be attached.

And be it further resolved 2nd. That knowing we will never be forgot by him, who has been to us as a father more than a military commander, we send him a copy of these resolutions, and also a copy to the Editor of the Newport News for publication.
