Mr. Brown
Dear Sir,
Your communication concerning your son William was received this morning and I will at once reply.
I am very sorry to inform you that your son William was killed while on picket at this place June 17
th. He was at the time occupying a rebel line of works, which they had evacuated the morning previous and again retook on this day (the 17
th). They were at the time he was killed occupying another line of rifle pits some 300 yards from us. And sharp firing was carried on during the entire day up to the time they charged us and drove us out, which was about 4 p.m.
Your sone was shot through the heart, before noon, while assisting to carry off the body of a comrade who had just been killed. I should have sent you word of his death before, but did not know where to send a letter.
Unfortunately, his body was left in possession of the rebels, as it was impossible to remove it.
He left no clothing or any effects.
I am, Sir, yours truly,
Theo C. Wildman
