July 9^th 1862
 
I received your letter regarding Corporal Lane and find the following:
 
Statement about the horse correct and this Lane statement the man gave me that had the horse he came here on, that he forgot and stated that he had been lost and robbed.  So, as I could not rely on his story, I took the horse and saddle with a watering bridle which was the whole equipment he had from him and sent him with a guard to Manassas.  So, I have given the horse and equipment to Corporal F. F. Lane, which I suppose you will find to be all correct.
