July the 5th 1862

Dear Cousin,

I received your welcome letter today and was glad to hear from you once more. But was sorrowed to hear that Biely is going to get married. If I had knew that, I would have stayed and tried to persuade her out of that notion. For she was my main dependence for a wife. But now she is gone and I don’t know how I can get now if they all get married while I am gone. I will have to wait for a young growth. Tell the girls that I would like to see them very much. Tell Miss Ellen Thompson that I heard that she wouldn’t keep company with a union boy. But you tell her that if she was to see me, that she couldn’t help keeping company with the union boys. For they are so much better looking than the secesh. All the Mead County boys are well. Johnson Stiles has got with the regiment and is stout and as hearty as ever. I don’t think it will be long before we will be home. We all get along very well. Except one, that is big headed Smith. They hadn’t but two in the company that likes him. That is Harry Casey and Squire Troutman.

Tell Mary Jane and Marvin that I want them to write to me. For I am anxious to hear from you all, as we can’t get to see each other. It was once so we could see each other every Sunday or two. But I am in hopes that it won’t be long before we can be together again.

I shall have to bring my short letter to a close. So no more at present.

But still remain,

Your affectionate cousin,

Micajah Bennett
