Col. John T. Sprague
Adjutant General
State of New York
Sir,
I have the honor to respectfully recommend for promotion to the position of Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st United States Sharpshooters Capt. W. H. Nash of that Regiment.
He was one of the first in your state to take up arms under the President's first proclamation and has served ever since in the Army of the Potomac.
Capt. Nash is one of the most prompt and efficient officers in the service. He has served with distinction in the Peninsula campaign also in the Pope, Fredericksburg , Chancellorsville and Gettysburg campaigns, and in the recent movements of the army. At the crossing of the Rappahannock at Kelly's Ford he was conspicuous for his gallantry being the first to cross the river.
His qualities as a disciplinarian and extensive experience in the field well qualify him for the position and as a reward for his valuable service. I trust he may receive your kind consideration.
