Dear friend,
Your brother was one of as many 200 sick and wounded soldiers who came into our hospital last Saturday morning. The same day he sent you a letter. Since such time he has been much disappointed in not hearing from you. He things of you may not have received either of the last two he sent you.
His wounded hand has assumed a more serious character than he at first supposed. It has become more inflamed within the last few days. The inflammation spreading more up the arm. The journey from Fortress Monroe was a haring one for many of them, which with the ride of a mile up here had a bad effect. Also, your brother’s case. I think loneliness may be counted as one of his ills. To be so much nearer friends than he has been for a long time and yet so far away. As not to see any of the loved ones is very stabilizing.
I do not wish to alarm you about your brother as there is no necessity for it. He is up every day and we think that when the weather improves, he and the rest will be benefited by it. He has felt a little lonesome and thinks it would cheer him up very much to see or hear from you. He expressly wishes me to tell you that he had every care he needed. That he feels very much at home.
I would like to add for myself that we strive that our hospital shall furnish to our sick and wounded every comfort possible. It is a great comfort to have them home. Should you wish to come on to see your brother, he could enjoy it and if not, write him soon.
Direct to “Military Hospital”, Albany.
With respect,
Miss Elisa E. Cary
