Dear friend,

Your very kind note of May 13th came to hand on yesterday, accompanying a box of clothing for myself, Captain Matt Wright and Lieutenant Seabrook, which was thankfully received by the entire party. The clothing fitting in every respect, for which we are thankful. Being in want, I regret not being able to return the compliments in some way. The edible is very nice. Something a prisoner scarcely gets. Being tired of our fare here, we appreciate them highly.

Also, the tobacco came in good time, as we had none. I am getting tired of prison life and long to go south.

I must close my bad correspondence note by asking to hear from you frequently.
