My Dear Friend,
It is with pleasure that I acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 24th of February. You spoke of sending me a letter and money on the 1st of January. I never heard of it. I left Johnson’s Island on the 18th of February and I received no notice of it up to the time I left there. There is something strange about it. Colonel Pierson certainly knows something about it. When I left there, he never said anything about it. You can write to him and so will I and we will find out about it. Well, I have enjoyed good health all the time. I feel a little unwell this evening but in close confinement with irons on. I don’t know what it is for. I suppose it is for a hostage. Please find out something about it and let me know. I fear that my health will fail me if I remain long in close confinement.
My dear friends, I fear that I did wrong in writing to you that last letter. Please forgive me for it. I intend to return the kindness when chance offers me an opportunity. Charley Brand has been sent to Point Lookout. I think he was very well when I last saw him. So, also, was Captain Thomas Jones, who is one of my particular friends. I think he is much of a gentleman. Remember me kindly to any inquiring friends and remember me to remain, as ever.
Your Friend,
Frank Battle
