My Dear Cousin,
Your very welcome letter was received last evening and many thanks for your kind proposition to supply me with some clothing, but it is just too late to avail myself of your kindness. We, yesterday, received notice that no more permits would be granted us. I am glad to state, however, that I am still not very greatly in need. A thousand thanks for your kindness in trying to get my name upon the exchange list. Though am sorry you think the prospects so blue.
I received a letter from my friend in Alexandria a few days since and he too is interesting himself in my behalf and writes me that he thinks the prospects for getting me specially exchanged are very flattering indeed. And I must acknowledge his letter has inspired me with some hope. I would so like to spend X-Mas with you. But there is no chance. I am short for obtaining a parole. My last was spent at Johnson's Island and isn't too bad that I am to pass another in prison.
But excuse my poor scrawl. It is so very cold, I can scarcely manage the pen.
With kind regards and wishing you all a Merry Xmas.
Your affectionate cousin,
F.C. Boston
