Hamilton, North Carolina
March 11th 1862
 
Dear Miss,
 
You May be somewhat surprised when you receive this message, but still bear in mind that when friends are separated, they always remember that while they were together, they happily enjoyed many pleasant hours. And while they are parted, they throw their memories back and wish that time might bring to pass the same pleasures which were once so pleasantly enjoyed. But now the hardships of war are to be borne, and no such pleasures can be realized.
 
I must acknowledge that I did not fully know the blessings of peace, but now I know the blessings, fighting or the fatigues of camp life. Do you not sometimes cast a wishful eye back to the past and relish your mind and imagination of things that were once realized by you? I hope that during the long absence of our many soldiers, you may fully learn to appreciate the company when an opportunity is offered.
 
I am absent from you, and I hope to hear by the way of correspondence in a few days from you. Address me at Hamilton, North Carolina, Company D, 34th Regiment, North Carolina Volunteers.
