A very rare early war CSA Letterhead written and signed by Benjamin N. Clements, Chief of the Appointment Bureau, CSA Post Office Department, writes:
Confederate States of America
Post Office Department
Appointment Bureau
Richmond
November 23rd 1861
Sir:
The enclosed letter was found in the Dead Letter Office and is forwarded you with the consent of the Postmaster General as giving an index to the political feelings of the two person concerned. Neither of them have been applicants to this Department. I scarcely think it may be of any importance. I hope both have become ere this loyal men, yet at this hour it behooves us to be vigilant.
I am Sir
With Great Respect
Yours,
B. N. Clements
