Commutation of Quarters dated December 7, 1864 for Captain Grant who in October 1862 was appointed to the Engineer Bureau with the rank of Captain. In 1863, Grant was given the responsibility of designing and constructing the 12 mile defensive fortifications that would protect Atlanta in 1864. He was transferred to Athens, Georgia on July 18, 1864 and on May 8, 1865 he was captured.
Captain Grant's invaluable assistance to the CSA was to superintend the construction of the defenses of Atlanta and Augusta and the reconstruction of the raided railways.
