Miss Virginia,
Your letter of 24th April was received in this 7th May and was sometime earlier but owing to sickness and a want of stamps prevented one from answering earlier. I have been suffering with a severe carbuncle on the back of my neck.
The box was a very nice one and clothing suited me most admirably. The testament has been nearly read through and the passages marked noted. And judging from the last one that you entered to comply with my request. In regard to your picture as were an endeavoring to procure my release. (Brigadier General D. H. Rucker of Washington is a distant relation of mine and I know he will assist you). And by seeing the above named man, who I have just been informed is in DC, I can go home soon.
Write soon and believe me your cousin,
E. P. Rucker
