Original Civil War document, written in period ink.

Fort Mitchel
Hilton Head, South Carolina

October 8th 1863

Colonel Edwin Metcalf
Commanding
3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery

Sir,

As I expected, Major General Gillmore paid a visit to Fort Mitchel. I met him at the dock where the day guard is kept, which paid the proper honors. The guard was turned out at the gate and all the men in front of the quarters. General Gillmore expressed himself as being much pleased, complimented the condition of the guns and the magazines, found not one word of fault and made only one suggestion, which was to have the gate closed at night. It has formerly been but half shut. His visit passed off very pleasantly and I think quite creditable to the Company and Fort.

I invited him to visit the Cook House and Hospital. He said he had not time and had no doubt but they were in excellent condition.

I have the honor to be,

Very Respectfully
Your Obedient Servant,

Martin S. James
1st Lieutenant
Company E
3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery
