If the enemy attacks in force, they will be met and fought in our works around New Bern. In which case it is probably that some buildings or barracks will be hit and burnt by the enemy’s shell. If so allow them to burn and do not let any regiment break ranks to create confusion. This must be carefully looked after and Brigade and Regimental Commanders must have it well understood in this respective, Brigades and Regiments.

The enemy will be tired out if possible in fighting our works and the idea is to sally out and capture their artillery when they have exhausted their efforts. Regimental commanders must be fully instructed as to how and when they are to obtain ammunition.

The Commanding General calls upon officers to presume the strictest order preventing leaving the ranks. Promote quick and prompt obedience and to regulate everything so as to prevent confusion.

The support and defense of the Gaston County Bridge is with the garrison and the 17th Massachusetts Volunteers.
