Captain James S. Carey
Commissary of Musters, 9th Army Corps
Captain,
I have the honor to submit the following statement and apply for muster out and discharge.
I was mustered into the 29th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers (a three year organization) as 2nd lieutenant, July 23, 1862 at Boston, Mass., by Captain J. M. Goodhue, 11th New Jersey Infantry, Mustering and Disbursing Officer. The only evidence of muster received by me was a certificate written by the mustering officer upon the back of my commission. I always understood that my term of service expired with that of the organization in which I was mustered, which term expired December 13, 1864.
The regiment, however, reenlisted as a veteran organization, January 2. 1864. I was absent on the detached service at the time the regiment reenlisted. I did not signify my intention to serve during the term of my veteran regiment and have not received the veteran furlough of thirty days. I was mustered as 1st lieutenant, February 25, 1863 and as a captain, October 12, 1864.
I am very respectfully
your obedient servant,
John M. Deane
Captain, 29th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers
