Dear Sir

As a Marylander I am sure that it will gratify you to know that I have been brevetted a Major Genl. Of Vols. “for gallant and meritorious services during the war.”

I preferred that the appointment should come through the proper military channel, otherwise I would not have hesitated to have approached you for friendly interference in my behalf, as I have never had a doubt but that if I had asked your assistance, it would have been cheerfully given.
