To: Major General Q. A. Gillmore
Hilton Head, South Carolina
Sir,
Permit me to say a word which I should have spoken at our interview this morning but for the other matters then engaging your attention.
The recent changes among the Field Officers of my regiment have been such as to make Major Ames, now in command at Fort Pulaski, very anxious to go into the field. And I have promised to aid him to the extent of my power. I feel that it is very desirable also, that the services of Lieutenant Colonel Brayton should not be lost to that portion of the regiment on Morris Island. Feeling that I owe much to these officers, and willing to gratify them at any reasonable sacrifices, I am making the offer of accepting the command of Fort Pulaski, should you desire it in case of Major Ames being order to Morris Island. As I trust it may be.
I have the honor to be, General,
Very Respectfully Your Obedient Servant,
E.M.
Commanding
