Mr. Skillman Doughty
Sir,
As you have requested of me to write to you I have taken the present opportunity of doing so to let you know where I am. I arrived out here last Wednesday all safe and sound and was assigned to the 40 New York. I was mustered in yesterday for pay, but I have not got my Bounty yet and I do not now when I shall get it. I think it is a swindle all through. But I am very happy and content and comfortable we are only half a mile from the rebels. The Pickets can talk with one another and trade papers and tobacco. They never fire at each other. Now deserters come in every night. They all say that they were sick of it. I have got nothing more to tell you at present but if you will answer this I will rite to you and tell you more. Will you please send me a paper. I remain yours truly and substitute
