Dear Sister,
I hasten to acknowledge the receipt of your letter received by this morning’s mail. I was very glad to hear from you. But would have like much better to of seen you than to of heard from you. I think Warren is having great times and is anticipating something extra when I come home. I would advise him not to anticipate too much for he may be disappointed. I am not against writing you but a few words for I hope to see you before this time next week. I don’t want you to go to getting up any parties or anything of that sort for my benefit. For you know that is not my style. Plain and unassuming is my motto! I expect to be home about Wednesday evening January 4th 1864. If I don’t come I will send you word so you can meet me at the Depot at Birmingham. You need not tell anyone when I am coming if I can’t get started from Mesa time enough to take the train for Birmingham. I don’t know what I will do but I will try too. If you don’t hear anything from me inquire at the Telegraph Office. No more at present.
Your Brother,
