Mr. Garlick
Dear Sir,
I am glad to be able to inform you that Charley’s fever has taken a favorable turn and that he is now fast recovering. Gladly would I write you three times per week did I not think he will be able to ensure for himself soon. I was up to the Hospital this evening. I told Charlie I was expecting to write you this evening. He told me to tell you, “he would be able to write you, in 3 or 4 days, had been very sick but felt a great deal better now.” Which we are all very thankful for. If I have done you a favor, it is well. In doing so, I have only done my duty as a comrade, battling together for the preservation of our nation’s life. When I can assist a fellow soldier I shall do so gladly and the satisfaction that I have done right, and the approval of a clear conscience will reward me bountifully. Therefore, I repeat if I have done, you a favor, happy am I. If anything unusual should take place in regard to Charles, I will inform you.
Respectfully yours,
Sergeant David A. Baldwin
