Dear Molly,
It is one o’clock p.m. and I have been since 10 o’clock last night getting this far. I have found the latter part of the night and until 11 o’clock. I have not got wet much having bot__ and another rubber coat. The most of my command been passed up. The 51st is with me. The 7th just passed us while we are waiting to take on wagons and baggage. I take only my large valise, having my two trucks and book valise and large box of books and my best sword here. I think we shall be too late to head off the rebels. Though perhaps the rain may swell the river there they will be stopped. We will be there to push on to pass on beyond the Potomac, if they get across. I of course cannot say. May God prosper in every face and have all prosper in his will.
I have a good lunch of tea and biscuits, both while waiting here and feel quite satisfied. Dr. Jewett found A. Seymour of the 10th and Myron of the 51st.
Love and blessings to you all.
Affectionately,
H. Briggs,
