Dear Sister,
I have just set down to answer your kind letter which I received tonight and read with great pleasure. I am well at present and I hope you are the same. I am glad you sent them shirts for I want them very much. I got a letter from Hilda last night and I answer it about an hour ago. She said that she heard that we had a battle since I wrote to her before but we had not. But we expect to have another one soon. They are cannonading now. I am glad you sent me a cake of sugar. For I think I would like some. Eliza, I am on picket today and it is going to rain soon. I am glad you sent me them stamps for I want them. Eliza, everything looks very pleasant here now. The cherries are ripe and then in the meadow the grass is about one feet high. I had lots of ripe cherries to eat today and they were very good. Eliza, I shall not write much more this time for I haven’t got much time. But the next time I write, I will write a good long letter. I must close. Good bye from your brother.
