My Dear Wife,
I feel quite sure I am right on the day of the week but the day of the month I am not quite sure about. I am now sitting alone in Frank’s tent having been standing out and witnessing the sports of this evening for an hour until I am well cooled through. Today I have made a tour of full twenty miles on horseback and this evening am obliged to exercise some care about sitting down.
Frank and myself have been to Arlington Heights and to the mousier of General Lee, to the National Cemetery on the estate and to the Freeman’s village of which we had heard so much and into their school. I have not felt so well paid for any days time since I left home as for this. I cannot give you detail of matters, but after I get home these letters will help me to remember almost everything.
We passed the Log Bridge that Frank used to pass so much cheer. The old 25th were guarding it. Their old camp – the log huts they built are all torn down now. Tomorrow we shall probably go to Mount Vernon and Friday I may start east though it is uncertain as the weather is very unfavorable. I have had the benefit of three rainy days two of them quite rainy and today rather a cold and dull one with a little rain and no sunshine. Frank is so anxious to go to Mount Vernon himself as well as to have me go, that I have determined to gratify him as well as my own curiosity and go if I do not get home till Monday or Tuesday morning.
Tell Mr. Wiuslan I hope he will forgive me this time being it is the first offense and tell A,l he must play it on me in the same way. Capt Falls, Lt Holmes (who married Carin Russell), Lt Larabee and all the other boys are well. Love to all
Your Affectionate Husband
