General Casper Ward A
Benton Barracks, St. Louis, MO
October 15, 1863

Friend Brown,

My health is pretty good I have been Ward Master of Ward A (Dr. Reeds Ward) about 4 months. I am glad indeed to be able to tell you that I give good satisfaction to Dr. Reed and others above me in authority.

My position is a good one for me, but a very busy one, but I care not for that for I am willing to be busy. Dr. Reed has been a good friend to me, he has treated me like a brother. And be assured that I thank you for and appreciate your kindness to me in recommending me to Dr. Reed as you did repeatedly. It was with much satisfaction that I heard of your appointment to the office you hold and also of the evidence you gave in your dealings with a certain class of people in the neighborhood of McGregor, of your efficiency as Department Provost Marshall.

Out a vote of 111 here at the hospital day before yesterday we gave Colonel Stone 104 votes. What do you think of that? I did not see a single Tuttle ticket here for Clayton County and don’t believe there was any. I presume that general Tuttle wishes by this time that he had just kept his name off of that ticket.

I will write you again in a few days in regard to some business I ask you to attend to for me. Give my best regards to Mrs. Brown and the children. I received a letter from Margaret yesterday in which she spoke of going to see you as soon as she could arrange it to do so. I think of having what personal property we have sold and have Margaret come to St. Louis. I am sorry to say that I fear she has rather a hard time where she is & would be better off here than there. I have formed the acquaintance of a good family in the city with whom she could have a good & comfortable home at a very slight cost and at the same time be where I could see her every few days.

Please write me a long letter.

Yours most Truly
L. W. Scott

Dr. Reed & family are well
Please direct yours as this letter is headed – precisely.
