My Dear Monroe,
I wrote you very hurriedly yesterday morning and promised to write again this. I find myself nearly as much hurried this morning as I was yesterday. This is our issuing day and George Christie is sick and Bob and I must do the work. Our regiment has not yet returned though we have some 300 men here yet. General [John R.] Kenly, who is quartered close by me, sent me word yesterday that our regiment was coming back. I believe this is true, though I am sorry for it. I don’t like this brigade and hope we may be separated from it.
I cannot tell you positively, my son, about your coming down here yet. I must see our regiment settled down once, and then I can let you know. I think it is likely you can come down a week or two. Certainly you can if we remain here any length of time.
I am well, my dear boy and hope you are all well. Kiss “Mam” and the pets for me and my love to all. Be a good boy and write me soon. Have the “Black Birds” made their appearance yet? How are the “Robbins?” Be careful boy!
You Affectionate Father,
James Touchstone
