Headquarters Volunteers Engineers
Camp near Petersburg, Virginia

My Dear Mother,

I have written three letters to you and have received only one from you. I wish you would answer all the letters that I send too and then I can tell whether you get them all or not. Bout 10 days ago I sent a letter to you and I haven’t received no answer yet to whether you have received it or not. Now I have written 13 letters all around home inside of two weeks and I have received no answers from any of them only one from you and 3 wouldn’t have received them only no one could make out the name only myself. You see our regiment is divided all over between here and Florida. And the letters came first about 22 miles from here. And are assorted there and they know all the men where they are and so mine is sent on down to Florida and South Carolina. I am here in Company H and I am going to get my letters directed in the name of any one of my Sergeants. I have written many different letters to Bella Vasburg and have received none from her yet. And so now tell Emma to ask Bella why she doesn’t answer my letters. And then tell me what Bella says back to Emma. Now Ma if you haven’t sent my letter box on the way to me which I told you to get made then direct it as I give you the directions now.

I must close for the present so goodbye,

From you Dear Son,
George M. Reock
