Dear Brother,
It being yours and Kington’s birthday and having nothing to do, I thought I would write you a few lines to inform you that I am in good health and I hope you and all the family are the same. Especially my Dear Mother. Tell her to write me a long letter soon. Let me know in your answer to this if Mother received any relief money. And if you took that coat up from the pawn brokers. Your birthday was celebrated very highly in the 24th Army Corps and by me individually as follows. A sour croute dinner and a good supper. And accept my best wishes and I hope you will spend many more birthdays.
The weather here today is most splendid in every way. This morning I came off of picket duty and four rebels came over and I asked one what troops and who they are under. Were in front of Richmond and he told me Kershaw’s Division under General Longstreet. Composed mostly of Mississippi troops.
Give my respects to Dear Charley and tell him his long and most precious letters was duly received. Generals and staff officers were up here inspecting the lines. And I expect there will be a big battle soon. The adjutant of this regiment is a school mate of mine. And he sent for me the other day to see if I would take teamsters. And I refused it. And he gave me to understand that as soon as there was a detail to be made, I would be the first one. Up to date no signs of a court martial. But I have the documents, strictly private. Henry is well and has not become his boss yet. We will be paid off this week yet. And if so, I will send five on home. No more at present. Except answer as soon as possible and believe me.
Respectfully your brother to heart,
Harry C. Ridgway
