My Dear Uncle,
Your very welcome letter was received last evening and I was very glad to hear from you. My health is very good and I am enjoying a very east time at present. Although, we expect soon to be on the march and will probably have some fighting. I have received my commission as Major. But have not been mustered in the regiment yet. And am awaiting the action of the War Department. I am yet on the staff as Captain and will let you know when I return to my regiment. I received a letter from Edwin a few days ago. I am glad to hear he has such good quarters and no doubt he enjoys himself fiercely. Sherman is indeed a great man and a splendid general. I wish we had more like him. I am looking anxiously for the time when we shall all be permitted to meet again in peace. I shall send to you all my money I have to send after paying my expenses. And I shall be very much obliged to you if you will place it in a safe position. I know that it is the best plan for me and shall do all that is in my power to try and save for a “rainy day.”
Please give my love to Asa and all the family. I have no news of interest to write this eve. Please write when convenient and I will do likewise. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
I remain,
Your affectionate nephew,
August W. Keene
Please direct as before.
