Dear Father,
I thought I would drop a few lines to you as I had a good opportunity. Private George L. Cheney, of our Company, is going home. He is the man we had wounded in the late fight at Sir Johns Run. He has received a furlough and starts tomorrow morning, January 17th. I send you this short letter, also one other.
Enclosed, I send you a piece of the rail of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road (which I got while at Sir Johns Run in Virginia), which was destroyed by the Rebels.
Having nothing else to write, I close.
Yours, etc.,
Corporal Dan R. J.
