My Dear Wife,
Once more I am in a measure, fine. I have got out of the hands of the Rebs but what little there is of me left is not of much account to myself or anyone else. I am so crippled up with the scurvy and rheumatism that I think it very doubtful if I ever get entirely well again.
Give my love and a kiss to all the children. We are going to be sent up the river in a few days but where the Lord only knows. I will write to you again as soon as I arrive at a place where I will remain long enough to get an answer to you. Until then farewell.
Ever your husband
H. D. Gardner
P. S. Give my best respects to all my friends
