Friend Croswell,

I received a letter from you from Portland. Sent you word that my family must be moved and that you made arrangements to have them go back to the farm. But Edward came down and made arrangements for them to go to Jean Hamblins or a part of them and for Rosa to stay at Mrs. Dyer’s home. I have no doubt but Jean will make Mary more comfortable than she would be at Mrs. Dyers. So I think well of her going there. But I do not want Rosa to stay at Mrs. Dyers. I had rater she would go anywhere else for I do not like to have her with Mrs. Dyer at all. And now that her mother is away it would be worse than ever. So you will do me a favor by getting her another place. You said that Mary was with your mother and I am very glad that she has so good a place and hope that she and your mother will like each other. I have not [heard] from my brother yet. But have written to him twice about Hiram and think he will attend to him. Should like you to write what arrangements was made with Jean about the pay for their board and how much she has per week. My health is not so good as usual. But hope to be in better health when next I write you. We are expecting to move on the Johnny’s soon and expect to whip them where ever we find them. And I hope that this spring campaign will close up the war. But it is hard to tell how it will turn. For the rebs are strongly postured and seem to be determined to resist but it does not seem as though they could hold out much longer. But time will tell. So hoping to hear from you soon.

I remain yours truly,

Walter Jordan
