Camp near Warrenton, Virginia
July 30th 1863
Dear Brother Charlie,
I have taken the pen with the intent of answering your last kind message which we received a few weeks since. Perhaps you think we do not write as often as we ought to. I will tell you Charlie, I have written only four letters since the middle of June. I wrote two to Father, one to Chas. and Martha and one to Cousin Henry Ayers. We have had a pretty hard time since we left that beautiful River call the Rappahannock. Only think but a little more than a week ago. We were in Maryland. We are now about two miles from Warrenton and only about 40 miles from Fredericksburg, that miserable secesh hole. We have been in this camp ever since last Saturday. Expect to move every day. My health is very good at this time. Both of us have been very healthy all summer. Byron has just been over to see us. He is well. His arm is about well. I cannot write you any war news for I do not get any myself. I have not seen a paper for a long time. I would like to hear from Charleston. I think our men are at work at that place. Well Charlie, how do you get along with your marching? You have not been drafted yet have you? Please write as soon as you get this and I will try and do better next time. Remember me to the folks. Tell them to write.
Please accept this from your affectionate brother
