Dear Brother,
I received your letter of the 27th and the 31st and I was glad to hear that you were all well. I waited a few days to hear from you but no letter to me. So I could wait no longer. And I sat down and wrote a long letter to you and sent it out the same morning that I got one from you. I got your letter at noon for our mail comes in at noon and I knew that you would get the letter before I could send you an answer to the one that I received. So I thought that I would wait until you wrote another letter. But I was lonesome today. So I thought I would write a few lines to you. I like to write and let you know how I am. I wrote to you that you could have my receipt for painting. Have you found it? Let me know in your next letter. And let me know how you get along in painting. I have been to a funeral today. One of the privates of Company C. He was from Northville. His name was Butles. It was a solemn day. He was loved by all that knew him. It is very sickly here. There have been four deaths in our regiment within a week. John, I will send a few solemn verses to you and Cate and I wish that I could send the time with them but I think I shall live to come home and sing them for you. I have not heard from Billy yet but I have wrote to him. We expect our pay Tuesday. Then I shall have my likeness taken in my uniform. But I must close this and write more in my next so good bye.
This from your affectionate Brother,
Anson W. Hutchinson
To John W. Hutchinson
To John and Cate,
I thank you for the money and I shall send him a fine present.
