Dear Cousin,
I receive your letter of the 17th of December last night. It has been almost four months in coming. I have written to you twice or three times since that. I was glad to hear from you and the folks at your place. I got a letter from home yesterday. They were all well as usual. We have changed our letter. We are Company D, 10th Regiment New York Heavy Artillery. I have not much new to write this time. I should like to be to your place to go to school this winter but I am getting a very good lesson. It is a lesson that I shall not forget very soon but I don’t know. As I am sorry. Yet if you see any of Uncle John’s folks, tell them to write to me and I will answer their letter. I have written to them three times and have got no answer yet. When you answer this tell me where Lewis lives and I will write to him. Tell him not to enlist if he can get along without it. For it is no fun. I can tell anybody there is one company going to leave the island to go to Sandy Hook. But I don’t know which one it will be. We have not gotten any pay now for three months. But expect it every day until we get it. But I don’t know as I have anymore to write this time. Give my respects to all that inquire after me. I don’t know as you can read this for my pen is very poor.
