Mr. George Pierce
Dear Sir,
As Sam is not very well and in the hospital, he wanted me to write to you and let you know exactly how he is. He is now improving. Though he is very weak from his sickness. He was taken quite sick on the 21st of February. Bilious (as I thought). The doctor came to see him and told him to go to the hospital where he could be taken care of better than he could in the tent, where so many of us is together. Since he has been there, everything has been done for him that could be done. A great deal could be said of our Lieutenant George C. Kibbe, who has been to see him every day and got him everything that he wanted. The hospital is near the camp. I just went down and seen him. He told me to tell you to tell your mother not to worry about him for he is comfortable. Our regiment were paid today. Four months pay. Lieutenant Kibbe will send to you an army allotment check of $40 by Adams Express Company for Sam. I am in hopes that he will be out in a few days. I go to see him 2 or 3 times a day. I hope you will not worry about him for he has all the care that could be taken for him. As it is time for roll call and as I have said all about Sam that is necessary, I will close.
I remain your humble friend,
Paul Lounsburg
