My Dear Old Friend,
I received your letter and was glad to hear from you. Now William, you can’t look for much of a letter from me. For you know that I am a poor scribe and I haven’t hardly able to sit up at all. The doctor says that the spine of my back is very badly affected. I have been in the hospital ever since the 10
th of December. I have got a running sore on my back. I can’t neither lay, sit, nor stand hardly.
William, I know that we have had fun together and I hope that we will have fun again but I don’t feel much like it now.
Now I must tell you what happened last night. Right across the street from here, there is a whore house and the women had a fight and made more noise than a lot of dogs after a bitch.
Now I will bring my letter to a close. You must excuse me for my bad writing and spelling.
No more at present but remain your friend,
George Whitgee
