Camp Near Brandy Station, Virginia
December 12, 11863
Dear Doctor [Surgeon C. F. Simpers],
We are now in winter quarters. The Colonel has built himself a log shanty. The Major will build one for his accommodation. Doctor Foreman and the Adjutant quarter together in their tent. The Colonel has offered you and I his tent. I am now occupying it. It has a good chimney in it. We have plenty of wood. I think, however, that a little stove will be needed in cold weather and as you proposed, that we should tent together in camp. I suggest to you for our comfort that you bring with you a small stove. We need but a little pipe, say one joint and elbow, as it can be run in the fireplace. A small stove in Cecil will not cost much and you can express it to Brandy Station, which will not cost much putting it in a small box. It will come safe. I will base half of the expenses, possibly I may not be here when you come. I am bad with diarrhea and if I am not getting better, I shall have to ask for a sick leave of absence for a few days.
Yours Truly,
Joseph T. Brown
