My dear Friend,
Allow me with gratitude and thankfulness to acknowledge the receipt of your kind letter of the 28th with enclosing me five dollars. For such aid, in the time of my need, causes one to appreciate more fully by experience the Christian charity couched in Matthew 25, 35-36, for I have been here nine months without money, as I knew no one north to apply to for assistance. In case I do not live to get home again, I have attached my note to this letter for you to present to my agent, Honorable Robert J. Tuggle, Campbellton, GA at the proper time. If I am not exchanged by the first of February, I will be pleased to get five dollars more of you till I can repay it. Your son, and friends named to you receive my sympathy as fellow prisoners. With many regards I remain your humble friend.
