Dear Madam,
Having learned of your kindness to some of the confederate prisoners at this place, I ask of you to be so kind as to send me a little sugar and coffee and a ham. As I have no money or acquaintances north of our lines, I am forced to call upon strangers. We get meat and bread enough to live upon. But I am in very bad health and have been ever since my capture, which was on the 22nd day of May last and have no appetite for such as we can get here. Hoping that it may be convenient to comply with my request.
I am very respectfully,
Your obedient servant,
John T. Shaw
1st Lieutenant
Company B
13th Mississippi Regiment Infantry
P.S. Direct your letter to the care of Captain G. W. Ahl. My home is Winchester, Mississippi.
