Honorable Simon Cameron
Dear Sir,
Allow me to present to you my friend, Sergeant George L. Schell of Company A, Colonel Moorehead’s Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, who desires the appointment of second lieutenant in U.S. Army.
Sergeant Schell is a son of John F. Schell, a worthy and highly respectable resident of this city, who has been, and still is, a permanent member of society of this community. His moral integrity is unreproachable and highly commendable in every particular, and his education and training are such as do most eminently qualify him for the position he seeks in the army. And I have no doubt, that should he be appointed, that he will discharge the duties of an officer and a soldier, with credit to himself and honor to his country; inasmuch as he possesses qualifications by nature, as well as by education that are imminently fitting for a superior military tactician.
Very respectfully yours,
N. Rauch
